nice work, i'd be interested to hear more about the co-operative system that the melon workers have... who are they actually cutting out with their arrangement that they've doubled wages? is there a chance that this form of organization will proliferate?
from what i understand, melon pickers are organized by a crew leader into small work gangs, comprising around 15 people. the crew leader is responsible for providing the labor as well as the quality of the work produced. he commands a big share of the wages. by eliminating the leader and pooling the day's wages, the CIW melon co-op can double wages. it also helps that the CIW crew has become known for the excellent quality of its picking, a predictable result under a system that rewards workers fiscally and psychologically for owning their work. (melon pickers, incidentally, make about 1.5 cents per pound picked). i gather that there's a debate within the CIW whether to establish hiring halls with a floor wage, much like the worker center model, or to stay with small, tightly knit work units distinctive to some forms of agricultural work.
